Anyone in the world I struggled a bit with using SoundFonts on Ubuntu 
Looking at the Melody Machine site for information wasn't particularly helpful - particularly as the Linux directions are to read the Mac OSX help page!
Of course, I should have read the Ubuntu help docs first: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToCompressedSoundFonts
Following the very simple directions here it was easy to install sfARk, and then to extract *.sfArk files with a simple one line command.
Note that I couldn't get the command to work as shown on this page, so I just placed the sfarkxtc application in the same folder as my .sfark files, and then used the following on the command line:
sfarkxtc filename.sfArk
Worked like a dream
